Headache Update

We set out early this morning to play with the rush hour traffic on our way to Aubrey's 6 month follow-up appointment with the neurologist. We arrived with no problems and were so thankful we weren't one of the 4 cars we saw in two different accidents on our way. God's angels traveled alongside us and protected us!
Today's appointment was with a new-to-us doctor in the neurology department. The one she saw previously has changed his practice a bit and is no longer affiliated with the neurology section at Children's Mercy. Knowing that we would be seeing a new physician brought along mixed feelings--would he change her treatment regimen completely, would he be more aggressive with her treatment, or would he agree with the first physician more or less? My worries were all set aside from the minute he walked into the examination room. EXCELLENT with my girls--yes both of them! He has a grandpa like personality and it is apparent that he has been working with children for some time! He thoroughly reviewed Aubrey's headache history, did a complete exam and then explained his goals for her treatment.
He first of all explained that if he would have been providing Aubrey's care from the beginning of her treatments he would have done an MRI to investigate further because many children that have migraine type headaches do not begin having trouble until 5 or 6 years in age. He went on to explain that these children are definitely the exception and not the norm. But, he said that since she has been having headache trouble for a little over a year now without other symptoms, then an MRI was not warrented since a bigger neurological problem would have shown it's ugly head in other ways by now. But, he said that she is having too many migraine and other type headaches in a month (the past month she had 6, with only one becoming a full blown migraine) for his liking. Our last neurologist said that as long as she was having 5 or less headaches in a month then the treatment was working but this physician likes them to be headache free the majority of the time.
So, the plan is to increase her medication dosage and then I am to report back to him in 1 month. If the increased dosage is not helping we may switch her to a different medication. His overall goal is to get her headache free for the most part for a duration of 6 months. If we can reach that goal then usually patients can be weaned off the prophylactic medications without much migraine trouble in the future. So, we will give it a go!
The ability to provide needed medical care for my children is a blessing. For a physician that is knowledgeable and willing to help Aubrey, I am thankful!

Glad to hear the appt went well and that you liked the Dr. And -- that you all stayed safe in your driving... the car next to us on our way to preschool this morning HIT A DEER! I've never seen a deer fly above another car before... yikes!! We said several prayers of thankfulness for our safety, too. =)
