Life is never dull with a preschooler around! Today proved to be just that--not dull! The title of this blog may have your minds spinning out of control trying to figure out just what this is going to be about. Well, I will fill you in that we have a new addition to our family and it is a baby (but in the plastic form).
When Aubrey turned 4 we thought it would be good for her to help out a little more regularly with things around the house. We made a chore list and went over it with her. If she completed all the tasks asked of her she could earn some money at the end of the week. We explained that a portion would go back to God but then she could use the rest as she wished. We have talked about the importance of saving for some bigger things she may be wanting. It has been a good teaching tool! In the beginning, I asked her what she thought she might save her money for and she wasn't quite sure. At first it was gum, candy, etc but then she decided maybe she would like a new toy of some sort.
I am not sure if you are familiar with "Baby Alive" but this doll is quite the thing. Our niece Emily received one from Santa this past Christmas and Aubrey has really enjoyed playing with it whenever they are together. Emily's doll talks, eats, pees, poops, and probably many more things. Aubrey thought this would be a great thing to save her money for. We came across a version of the doll that just drinks a bottle and pees so we talked her into working towards this one. Last night as we were "paying" Aubrey she counted up her money and she had saved enough to purchase the doll.
This morning we headed to the store and the entire way she told me she wanted the one with the blue shirt. I was so thankful when we found the one with the blue shirt at Target today. On the box I noticed that it said "It's a Boy!". I didn't think twice about it. Aubrey paid for her Baby Alive and then we headed to a friend's house to play for the morning. When we arrived, Aubrey's first task was to feed her baby (which she has named Hayden) his bottle. After working at it awhile she came over and asked me why he wasn't peeing. I investigated by checking his diaper and to my surprise this baby really is a BOY! Yes, that is right--an anatomically correct baby! I had no idea. I then helped Aubrey figure out how to feed him correctly so that he gets the water from the bottle and sure enough he started to wiggle--which means he is peeing. She was so excited and couldn't get his diaper off fast enough to change it. She laid him down on the table in front of her and to her surprise he was not done peeing when she took of the diaper. A stream (similar to that of a water fountain) of water came from the baby and sprayed Aubrey's shirt. Aubrey stood there with the most surprised look on her face. It was the funniest thing ever.
I believe this doll will definitely keep us on our toes and bring even more excitement to our days.

Wow...I hope that the discussion of "why it doesn't look like mine" will wait a while longer! :) Sounds like you guys are really on the ball with teaching her money skills. I am sure there's some adults out there that need to learn the same 4-year old lessons you are teaching Aubrey. Way to go! :)
